The mindset

GW1 will not make or ruin your season. A bad first week feels huge because it’s the only week you’ve got. A good first week feels like genius for the same reason. Neither story is true yet.

Your job before the deadline is simpler than the internet makes it: pick players who will play, in fixtures you can live with, at prices that leave you room to move later. Everything else is optional drama.

Pitchline is here as a second opinion — rankings, captains, compare, and later a weekly scorecard of how the forecasts did. Your squad still lives on the official FPL site. Always confirm there before you lock.

Before you hit confirm

• If Fantasy still feels fuzzy, skim the managers manual once — chips, hits, and deadlines in plain language.
• Open captains and rankings closer to the deadline than you think. Pre-season takes age badly.
• Stuck between two names? Compare them side by side and send the link to a mate if you want a tie-break.
• Want tips aimed at your squad? Join, link your team ID, then use the dashboard.
• Last pass on the official site: who’s flagged, who’s new, who might not start.

Your captain

Early weeks reward the boring choice: someone who starts, at home or in a fixture you trust. A steady double-digit haul from a locked-in name usually beats gambling on a “could explode” who might not even be in the XI.

When Pitchline’s captain list and your gut disagree, that’s useful. Write down why you’re overriding — minutes, news, or just preference. You’ll want that note when the points come in.

Looking like everyone else

It’s fine if your GW1 squad looks template. Ownership only bites when the popular picks blank and you had no idea why you owned them. August is for building a side you understand, not for winning the differential Olympics.

If you are going off-template, do it for minutes and fixture — not because a thread said “punty.” Mark the name on your watchlist so you can revisit the call after the whistle, not mid-panic on Saturday night.

The cheap seats

A 4.0 who never plays is not value. It’s an empty slot you paid for. Prefer the boring starter at a slightly higher price over the “enabler” who lives on the bench.

New signings and pre-season hype often outrun the numbers. That’s allowed — just know you’re betting on news and minutes, not on a long track record. Don’t spend your whole budget proving a point about a debutant.

Noise you can ignore

Price rises before you’ve even fielded a team. Perfect 15s built on projected line-ups. Takes that treat GW1 like a cup final.

Also ignore anyone (including Pitchline) who sounds certain about rotation, “50/50” tags, or set pieces that haven’t been seen in a competitive match yet. Forecasts miss those. Your eyes and the official site still win that fight.

After the first week

Once GW1 is done and the points are in, Pitchline will publish a Good / Bad / Ugly check — where the forecasts landed, where they were merely wrong, and where they were properly wrong. Same shape every week, so you can skim it with a coffee and move on.

Until then you don’t need a postmortem. You need a squad you’re willing to live with for a month, a captain you’d defend in the group chat, and a deadline you won’t miss.
