Last Fan Standing rewards patience. The winner is rarely the boldest picker; it’s the one who never takes an unnecessary risk and still has good clubs left when everyone else has run out.

The rules in one minute

  • Pick one Premier League club to win each gameweek, before the FPL deadline.
  • A win keeps you in. A loss knocks you out, and so does a draw unless your pool allows them.
  • You can’t pick the same club again until you’ve used all twenty.
  • Last one standing wins. Full rules are in How to play.

Picking a safe club

  • Home against a weak side is the classic safe pick. Home teams win more often.
  • Check the win chance, not just the names. A mid-table side at home to the bottom club can be safer than a top side away at a strong one.
  • Watch the week around it. Clubs just back from a midweek European trip often rotate and drop points.
  • Late in the season, motivation matters: a side fighting relegation can be tougher than its position suggests, and one with nothing to play for can switch off.

Saving strong clubs

Each club can only be used once, so every top club you spend on an average week is one you won’t have for an easy week later. Before you pick, ask: is this the best week I’ll get for this club? If a better one is coming, use a weaker club with a decent fixture now.

The weeks that are hardest to survive are the ones where no strong club has a good fixture. Keep a couple of strong clubs back for those.

Draws

In most pools a draw knocks you out, and about a quarter of Premier League matches end level. Evenly matched games are the riskiest, even at home. Check your pool’s rules: if draws keep you in, closer matches become much safer.

The end game

  • Count clubs, not just players. When a few of you are left, look at which strong clubs each of you still has.
  • Don’t copy the leader into a risky pick. If everyone else goes out the same week, you all stay in, so the safest pick is still the right pick.
  • Plan the last few weeks. Work backwards from the clubs you have left so you aren’t forced into a bad fixture.
